COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KHAS-TV marked 70 years on Jan. 1 as it began delivering local news and programming. The station celebrates its long legacy with special shows that honor its service to Lincoln.  KNOP
  • Pepe Fierro of Pepe's Bistro will host breakfast burrito fundraisers on the last three Sundays in January near 11th and B streets to help families displaced by a downtown fire. Volunteers are welcome to help wrap burritos and support local art.  KOLN
  • A local restaurant owner will host a burrito fundraiser this week to help six families made homeless by a downtown fire at Apollo Apartments.  KNOP
  • Pepe's Bistro owner PePe Fierro is serving breakfast burritos and cookies on the last three Sundays of January + proceeds will help families displaced by the apartment fire near 12th and G. Fierro said the warm meals and welcoming space bring comfort during recovery.  Nebraska Now

  • The posthumously published book ‘Whiteclay: An American Tragedy’ details how John Maisch fought to close beer stores — a battle that hurt Native communities. His widow, Julia, released the work to help Lincoln readers understand a long fight against harmful alcohol sales and its role in promoting community healing.  Nebraska Examiner

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NU and UNMC will consider Clarkson Regional Health Services' offer to buy its 50% share of Nebraska Medicine for $500 million on Jan. 9, a move Gov. Pillen supports for increasing local control of health care and stabilizing funding.  Nebraska Examiner

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lincoln gyms saw a surge in memberships as residents began their 2026 fitness resolutions today, with the YMCA reporting 120 new memberships (across four locations) and Good Life Fitness adding around 40 (boosting community wellness).  KOLN
  • Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services is proposing rules that could force local behavioral health providers to change staff and admin practices, cutting detox services at The Bridge Behavioral Health (in operation for over 40 years) and increasing reliance on emergency rooms; public comments are open until Jan. 16.  KOLN

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 6 Nebraska wrestling team faces No. 16 Northern Iowa today at 6 p.m. at the Devaney Center in a final nonconference dual before the Huskers host Purdue on Jan. 9.  Fox Nebraska
  • The Nebraska men’s basketball team beat Top-10 Michigan State (58-56) at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Friday; the game marked the Huskers’ biggest regular season contest in over 30 years.  KNOP
  • The Nebraska women’s basketball team lost 86-76 to No. 14 Iowa on New Year’s Day, with Britt Prince scoring 27 points in the game’s final stretch. They will return home Sunday to face Purdue at 2 p.m.  KNOP
