  • Drury Plaza Hotel opened in the Historic Haymarket near downtown attractions, offering 210 rooms (complete with dining and amenities) to serve locals and visitors.  Lincoln Journal Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nebraska’s new Kratom Consumer Protection Act requires manufacturers to register products and show warning labels about habit-forming risks. Nebraska City mother Randi Meade, whose 18-year-old son died after using kratom for pain relief, is lobbying in Lincoln for a full ban as the state moves forward with the act.  KOLN
  • Kratom rules under the new law are now in effect and require makers to register and add labels warning that the product can be habit-forming. A Nebraska City mother is urging officials to ban it after her 18-year-old son died following its use as a pain alternative.  KNOP
  • UNMC students are hosting blood pressure screenings to help local residents monitor their health (it is advised to check blood pressure every 3-6 months).  KNOP

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday night, Lincoln Southwest boys basketball team improved its record with a 71-59 win over Lincoln North Star after an 18-1 run in the early game; senior guards Uzziah Sanders, Makkiah Sanders and Dakari Wilson led key plays during the contest.  KFOR
  • On Jan. 3, 1973, Tom Osborne became Nebraska's head coach after Bob Devaney stepped down (he earned 13 conference titles and three national championships). Osborne later returned as Athletic Director in 2007 and retired in 2012.  KNOP
