COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Gathering of Uncommon Men plans to extend its winter clothing drive until Jan. 31 at the Lincoln Indian Center. The group, founded by Ron Sun Bear and Tony Laravie, uses service to help heal trauma and support families + build local strength. Nebraska Now
- ➤ Lincoln nonprofits are ramping up resource efforts as cold weather approaches; they are coordinating with local partners to meet rising demand for services across the community. KNOP
- ➤ Guardians of the Children will hold its annual chili cookoff on Feb. 7 in Lincoln. Residents can enjoy a friendly competition with a range of spicy recipes at this local, family-oriented event. KNOP
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska announced women's flag football as its 25th varsity sport. The Huskers will recruit 15 players by fall 2026 (with a head coach to be hired by summer) and play their first season in spring 2028. KNOP
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Forestry maintenance crews will start work in Wilderness Park on Friday to remove invasive trees and shrubs and lower fire risk, and trails will be closed until noon daily through March 31. KOLN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Speaker Arch introduced a proposed state law that would form a Nebraska-Ireland trade commission to boost business and academic ties. The commission will include members from the Departments of Agriculture and Economic Development and meet quarterly with no state funding. KNOP
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska DHHS extended the public feedback deadline for its Behavioral Health Service Definitions until Jan. 31. Nebraskans can review the new guidelines and send suggestions as instructed. Fox Nebraska
- ➤ Adams Middle School implemented new flu protocols yesterday to protect students during the flu season. The school will monitor symptoms and enforce hygiene practices (such as frequent handwashing) to reduce illness. KNOP
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ University of Nebraska is adding women's flag football as its 25th varsity sport. The team will begin its season in spring 2028 with a head coach hired by summer & recruit about 15 players by fall 2026, making it the first Power 4 school with a varsity program. KOLN
- ➤ Nebraska’s men won big against Oregon while Creighton advanced to Providence. Clayton and Mason will host 402 Tip-Off weekly from October through the season’s end (offering ongoing game highlights). KNOP
