BUSINESS NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • After Tyson closed its beef processing plant last November, thousands in Lexington lost their jobs; state agencies and local organizations now are helping residents with job searches, resume support, and English classes at the Department of Labor offices (open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.).  KOLN
  • With the Lexington plant closing, Lincoln officials are launching a workforce development program that pays $17.75 an hour for tree planting and offers weekly workshops on financial literacy & one-on-one career coaching to build local skills.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • A Grow Lincoln report shows that Lincoln had 32 restaurant openings in 2025, nearly double last year’s 19, while 18 eateries closed. Improved interest rates helped drive the surge, and 9 or 10 more openings are planned for next year.  Nebraska Now

  • University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor Larkin Powell will explain how human choices shape the Great Plains in a talk on Monday, Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. at Ockinga Auditorium on the UNK campus, drawing on ideas from his book (The Best of Intentions).  Fox Nebraska
  • NU President Dr. Jeffery Gold and Interim UNL Chancellor Katherine Ankerson sent a letter following a Jan. 15 listening session with faculty+staff. They said the budget reduction plan will move forward as approved by the board and that campus leaders are working to rebuild trust.  KNOP

  • An audit shows that Lincoln Airport’s property tax revenue doubled in 2025 from the previous fiscal year after a property tax increase. The finding highlights the tax adjustment’s financial impact on local operations.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • On Jan. 27-28, 2026 in Lincoln, the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts will hold its Legislative Conference focusing on artificial intelligence and advanced data tools for resource management.
