COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Frigid weather has pushed People’s City Mission — designed for 250 guests — to shelter more than 445 people, including 90 children. Pastor Tom Barber urges anyone braving the cold to come inside for safety.  KOLN
  • Lincoln Animal Control rescued an injured beaver outside a liquor store (20th and O) in central Lincoln on Saturday. The animal was taken for rehabilitation.  KOLN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A firefighter suffered minor injuries and five residents were displaced after a duplex fire near 13th and Washington streets early Friday; crews contained the blaze in about 30 minutes (the fire started from accidental cooking) in central Lincoln.  Nebraska Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Jan. 24, 1922, UNL graduate Christian Nelson was granted the patent for what was known as Eskimo Pie (now renamed Edy's Pie) after he combined ice cream and chocolate in one treat; the change was made later to address concerns over the original name.  KNOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Aging Partners will host free one-on-one digital workshops for seniors every Wednesday starting Jan. 28 through Apr. 29 at 600 S. 70th St., with sessions at (3:30, 4 and 4:30 p.m.) as part of a University of Nebraska Community Engagement program.  KFOR

  • Nebraska DOT reminded drivers in Lincoln that the *55 helpline is available 24 hours for roadside assistance. Troopers can dispatch help for vehicle breakdowns, dead batteries, empty fuel tanks or towing needs.  KNOP

HEALTH NEWS

  • A 12-year-old boy was life-flighted from a Lincoln hospital after severe malnourishment was detected on Jan. 12 — he was flown to Children’s Nebraska in Omaha for higher care as a court issued temporary custody on Wednesday.  KNOP

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nebraska defensive lineman Keona Davis confirmed his commitment to Miami after playing in 25 games at Nebraska. The Arizona native is set to move to Miami’s football program as the season progresses.  KNOP
  • The Nebraska wrestling team drew a record 7,891 fans on Friday at Bob Devaney Sports Center despite a 22-14 loss to Iowa, with Brock Hardy earning his 100th dual win (the 33rd in Huskers history). They will host No. 2 Ohio State today at 1 p.m.  KFOR
  • The No. 7 Nebraska basketball team remained undefeated after beating Minnesota 76-57 at Williams Arena in Minneapolis on Saturday. The Huskers overcame a 6-point halftime deficit, outscoring the Gophers 46-21 in the second half and will travel to Ann Arbor on Tuesday to face Michigan.  Nebraska Now
