ECONOMY NEWS

  • Nebraska’s unemployment rate (3%) stays unchanged after eight months, according to the Nebraska Department of Labor. Private industries in trade, other services and information added jobs in December, with the labor force growing to over 1,066,000 (up 2,000 from November).  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, Nebraska lawmakers considered bills to hold back underprepared 3rd graders, reinstate suspensions for K-2, and require teaching on communism during the Education Committee hearing. They will debate these proposals on general file in upcoming sessions.  KNOP
  • Glow Big Red is a fundraiser lasting 24 hours that begins Feb. 11 at noon at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to support Husker students with scholarship funds, student organizations, and academic programs (donations help enhance campus life).  Lincoln Journal Star
  • UNL has revised its faculty termination process to extend employment until May 14, 2027 to avoid mid-year job losses instead of giving a full 12-month notice, prompting significant schedule changes for the faculty.  Lincoln Journal Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Holdrege Street between 63rd and 65th is closed for emergency water main repairs with water expected to return by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday and additional work finishing Feb. 6.  Nebraska Now
  • Nebraska DHHS scrapped a proposal that would have cut live-in caregiver hours for families after Governor Pillen considered public feedback; the agency is opening a public review from Feb. 2 through March 4 (to help maintain quality care and manage rising costs).  KNOP

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nebraska Football’s 2026 schedule starts with home games vs. Ohio on Sept. 5, Bowling Green on Sept. 12, and North Dakota on Sept. 19 (with a bye in week eight) then includes a mix of home and away games that finish at Iowa on Nov. 27.  KOLN
  • Tuesday, Jan. 27, No. 5 Nebraska men's basketball played No. 3 Michigan in Ann Arbor; the Huskers, riding a 20-0 record, tipoff began at 6 p.m. at the Crisler Center on Peacock — live updates showed Nebraska leading at the first media timeout.  Nebraska Now
  • Nebraska Football’s 2026 schedule was revealed on a Big 10 Network show, with home games starting Sept. 5 against Ohio, Bowling Green, and North Dakota, a bye in week eight plus other contests through the season.  KNOP
