COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lincoln Animal Control inspected a home and found violations that led to the rescue of 92 cats, now under care at Capital Humane Society (where they receive treatment for infections, fleas, and dental issues). Adoption fees are half off until Sunday, Feb. 8 as the shelter works to open space for new adoptions.  KOLN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A discarded cigarette triggered a fire at a UNL fraternity house near 16th and R on City Campus early Wednesday morning — Lincoln Fire and Rescue reported about $50,000 in damage and no injuries.  KFOR

CULTURE NEWS

  • A historic study at Bancroft will showcase a renowned poet's creative process by displaying original manuscripts and handwritten notes. The exhibit is open to the public starting today.  KNOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Nebraska Athletics will add nearly 80 new scholarships for student-athletes for the 2026-27 academic year, with over 30 more coming next year and 40 expected the following year + the additions follow a House settlement that removes NCAA scholarship limits and expands opportunities for both men and women.  KOLN
  • Nebraska Athletics will add nearly 80 new scholarships for the 2026-27 academic year and plan to add 32 and 41 awards in the next two years to reach 360 total scholarships; the change follows a Congressional settlement from last summer and supports student-athletes' education & team success.  KNOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eastbound Cornhusker Highway between NW Seventh and NW Fourth streets will close today for water line repairs. Travelers are advised to follow the detour (I-80 East to I-180 South to Cornhusker) as work is expected to finish by Friday, Feb. 13.  KOLN
  • Seven new telecommunicators graduated at the Lincoln Emergency Communications Center Academy on Wednesday at Southeast Community College, making the center fully staffed for the first time in over 20 years; they will begin one-on-one training soon to answer calls and support community emergencies.  Nebraska Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department reported measles was again detected in wastewater from tests on Jan. 26 and 28 at the Theresa Street Water Resource Recovery Facility in north Lincoln, following last month’s community case, although no measles was found on Jan. 30.  KOLN
  • On Jan. 23, the Health Department found measles in Lincoln wastewater, and a confirmed case was reported in Lancaster County on Jan. 28, prompting officials to maintain vigilant monitoring of the outbreak.  Lincoln Journal Star

  • Dylan Berymon, a four star defensive tackle from Monroe Louisiana, signed his National Letter of Intent with Nebraska Cornhuskers on Feb. 4 during a school assembly. He committed after ranking as the top available prospect and choosing Nebraska over Kentucky.  KOLN
