EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Shelby-Rising City Public Schools closed its schools Wednesday and Thursday after nearly 30% of its students fell ill on Tuesday. District officials said the break will let them disinfect classrooms and urge students and staff to rest and recover. KOLN
- ➤ Pound Middle School students baked mini pizzas during Career and Technical Education Month to learn teamwork and food skills as part of the Healthy Living 6 course at Lincoln Public Schools (they also practiced using oven mitts for the first time). KOLN
- ➤ Lawmakers heard testimony on a bill introduced by Sen. Margo Juarez to exempt certified teachers, para-educators & paraprofessionals from state income tax starting in 2027. The measure aims to boost recruitment and retention amid ongoing teacher shortages. Nebraska Now
- ➤ Husker Nation broke records during UNL’s Glow Big Red giving day (Feb. 11-12) by raising $3,667,815 with 8,080 gifts. - ➤ Lincoln Transportation and Utilities held an open house Thursday night at Irving Middle School to explain a $5.4 million project to repair outdated water mains + improve road and pedestrian safety on 27th and South Street. Construction will begin in spring 2026 and finish by summer 2027. Nebraska Now
