EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The state legislature chartered the University of Nebraska as a land-grant institution on Feb. 15, 1869 (it opened two years later for 20 college and 110 preparatory students) and inaugurated the first graduate program west of the Mississippi in 1886. KNOP
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sen. Dan Lonowski introduced a bill in Lincoln today that shortens the waiting period for retired teachers from 180 days (with exceptions) to 120 days with no volunteer exemptions, a change designed to help retirees avoid repayment issues and backed by the Nebraska State Education Association. - ➤ Lane restrictions and parking challenges arise as a yearlong project to add three levels to the parking garage north of the County-City Building begins today in downtown Lincoln. Lincoln Journal Star

HEALTH NEWS

- ➤ At Spikez Beach Bar & Grille last Saturday afternoon, 65 teams raced to complete a 500-piece puzzle and nachos to raise funds for ALS support; the Missing Piece Mafia won in under 90 minutes + each fee helped fund free equipment loans and respite care. KOLN
