ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Lincoln Fire and Rescue determined an unattended campfire sparked a rail bridge fire Monday near Sun Valley Boulevard and Line Drive in west Lincoln; crews battled heavy smoke and limited road access while an engineering team surveyed repair needs for the active rail line. Nebraska Now
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Foreigner will perform at Pinewood Bowl Theater on Aug. 13 as part of its Celebrating Fifty Years tour—tickets go on sale Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. KOLN
- ➤ The Lied Center for Performing Arts began a 35 million dollar expansion project on Feb. 10 (its first major renovation in 35 years) that will add an 11,000 sqft studio theater and update lobbies and accessibility for community events; performances continue and a grand reopening is planned for fall. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska Extension will host a webinar on confinement feeding cow-calf pairs on March 17 at 6:30 p.m. Mountain time to guide cattle producers in handling drought and high pasture costs. Fox Nebraska
- ➤ Nebraska Athletics partnered with Linked2Literacy to boost reading at Tuesday's Go Big Read event in Lincoln where cheerleaders engaged kids at Eiseley and Gere Branch Libraries. The initiative aims to raise third grade literacy to 75% by 2030 and continues with a free Reading through Art exhibit at the Sheldon Art Museum on Thursday. KOLN
- ➤ Huntington Elementary was named the 2026 Inspire School of the Year on Tuesday after boosting academic scores and student belonging, receiving a $5,000 check from the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools. The school will use the funds to add benches around the walking track and launch a leadership club for fifth graders. KOLN
- ➤ Tiffany Heng-Moss has been named Harlan Vice Chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and vice president for agriculture and natural resources at the University of Nebraska following her interim service since June 2025. The appointment boosts her leadership role at UNL today. KFOR
- ➤ UNL historian Katrina Jagodinsky is using a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to research habeas corpus cases in the American West, & she plans to expand her digital project featuring over 2,000 cases with a book that examines how these petitions have shaped modern due process. - ➤ State Sen. Jason Prokop introduced a bill in Lincoln - it would require insurance companies to cover FDA-approved tests and treatments for Alzheimer’s disease to remove financial barriers for families. Lawmakers will review the proposal in upcoming legislative sessions. Nebraska Now
- ➤ Former Nebraska Gov Bob Kerrey resigned from the board of local clean-energy startup Monolith to prevent harm to the company amid scrutiny over his meetings with Jeffrey Epstein (he met Epstein for fundraising meals for The New School in New York). KNOP
