- ➤ Lincoln Children's Zoo asks locals to vote for a name for its female Matschie’s tree kangaroo born last year. Vote for one of four names until Thursday, Mar. 5 (11:59 p.m.); the winning name will be displayed at the zoo beginning Mar. 7 with the official announcement on Mar. 16. KFOR

- ➤ Union Pacific crews began rebuilding a century-old railroad bridge in west Lincoln after an unattended campfire caused a fire that led to its collapse earlier this week (near Pinnacle Bank Arena on Westgate and Sun Valley boulevards) while the investigation into possible arson continues. KNOP

- ➤ Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 departs Cheyenne on March 29 for a coast-to-coast tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with 27 whistle-stops in four western states, including a stop in Lincoln on April 9. Public display days occur in Roseville (April 10–11) and Ogden (April 18–19). KNOP
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lincoln Board of Education approved a two year contract on Tuesday that raises salaries for 3,700 educators by 4.2 percent for 2026-27 and 4.25 percent for 2027-28 while adding special education incentives and paid parental leave; the deal passed by a six to one vote and updates compensation & benefits. - ➤ A Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission hearing was held Thursday in Lincoln to review proposed emergency rules that would limit THC to 5 grams every 90 days & 40 milligrams per dose and require in-person doctor visits. Advocates say the changes could make access harder for rural and disabled patients. KOLN

- ➤ Columbus-area farmer Norman Lux underwent a first-of-its-kind heart valve procedure at Nebraska Medicine in Lincoln earlier this week and will soon return to work. Dr. Eng used the BATMAN technique to restore blood flow without open-heart surgery, offering patients a new option after previous procedures. KOLN
- ➤ Food Bank of Lincoln issued a recall warning on Thursday for Great Value Cottage Cheese distributed through mobile food sites + partner agencies. Recipients are urged to discard the product immediately. Lincoln Journal Star

- ➤ Lincoln Northeast won a Class A-6 girls basketball semifinal against Norfolk 48-39 at Ed Johnson Gym on Feb. 25 (key fourth-quarter baskets secured the win) and will face Omaha Westview at 5:30 p.m. today in the district championship. KFOR
- ➤ Nebraska Athletics named five-time national champion Liz Sowers as the first head flag football coach at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (her twin Katie Sowers will be associate head coach). They will join from Ottawa in June, and the varsity team will debut in spring 2028. Nebraska Now
