ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to three apartment fires over the weekend near South 27th & Rokeby, North 59th & Vine and North 70th & Adams after improperly disposed cigarettes started the blazes, and the department advised residents to use proper disposal methods to prevent future incidents.  KOLN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lincoln's longtime Zesto Ice Cream (located near South 11th and South streets; cash only) will reopen Thursday to mark its 76th year in business, running seasonally from mid-March to mid-October.  KOLN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Due to rising Middle East tensions, Lincoln gas prices have increased as Monday’s national average reached $3.48 per gallon. Local stations are adjusting rates, reflecting similar trends seen across the region.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • Nebraska farmers face rising fertilizer and fuel prices because of war in Iran ahead of planting season. Lancaster County farmer Rod Hollman said nitrogen fertilizer jumped from $645 to $800 per ton (anhydrous ammonia rose by $150) amid mounting cost pressures.  Nebraska Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fairness for Girls launched a signature drive Monday (10% of registered voters and a geographic cross-section needed) to put on the November ballot a constitutional amendment that would require public student-athletes to compete only on teams matching their sex at birth.  KFOR
  • The 56th Street improvement project resumes today as construction continues and drivers may face detours along the work zone; the project aims to deliver smoother and safer roads once completed.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • Former Nebraska System president Walter Ted Carter Jr. resigned from his Ohio State role on Monday after disclosing an inappropriate relationship with someone seeking public resources, and he apologized for his mistake as the board accepted his resignation. SPORTS NEWS

  • Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen announced on March 9 that coach Fred Hoiberg signed a contract extension (which keeps him at Nebraska through the 2031-32 season) after a record 26-win campaign with 15 conference victories; the Huskers will open Big Ten Tournament play Friday at 5:30 p.m.  KFOR
  • Nebraska men’s basketball moved into the AP Top 25 after scoring a final nine points in overtime to beat Iowa Sunday at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Despite a loss to UCLA Tuesday night, the team secured the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will play Friday at 5:30 p.m.  KNOP
