ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local farmers quickly contained a rekindled brush pile burn (southwest of Donipan) yesterday after a grass fire broke out, keeping the blaze under control. KNOP
- ➤ A magnitude 2.5 quake struck southeast of Cowles at 6:15 a.m. Thursday (USGS) and marked the fourth quake this month in south central Nebraska. KNOP
- ➤ Crews from Lincoln, Hallam, Wilbur, Bennett, Crete, and the Southwest Rural Fire Department responded to a wildfire near Crete yesterday. Officials closed Wittstruck Road plus used tractors to disk corn fields to help stop further spread. Nebraska Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On March 12, 1855, Lancaster County was created by the Territorial Legislature near Salt Basin (an area that drew early settlers). The county seat was settled as Lancaster in 1864 and later renamed Lincoln after it became the state capital in 1867. KNOP
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A state disability care assessment called InterRAI has sparked concern among families who fear cutting essential one-on-one aides, with hundreds of appeals filed. Nancy Enstrom said a Lincoln hearing this week showed benefits remain while state officials retrain staff. KOLN
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Lincoln High led much of the NSAA Class A quarterfinal at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday against top-seed Omaha Westside. The Warriors rallied late to win 61-58 and will face Lincoln Southwest today at 1:30 p.m. KFOR
- ➤ Lincoln Southwest beat Millard North 81-71 at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday, Mar. 11 with standout plays from Dakari Wilson + Uzziah Sanders, who each scored 26 points. The win moves them to Friday's semifinal against Omaha Westside. KFOR
- ➤ Three local boys' basketball teams played in a state tournament on Thursday; St. Pat's lost 55-46 to Elm Creek, Auburn edged Gothenburg 41-40 in overtime, and Ogallala won 77-43 over Syracuse to advance to Friday's semifinals. KNOP
