COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and the Faith Coalition of Lancaster County will co-host an interfaith prayer breakfast in Lincoln to celebrate the city's diverse cultures, faiths, and people. More details on the event's timing and location will be shared soon.  Lincoln Journal Star

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lincoln Airport is upgrading its main runway with an $85M project (jointly funded by the FAA and Nebraska Air National Guard) while planning expanded services with American Airlines flights this June to Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare, and eventually Phoenix.  Nebraska News Service

CULTURE NEWS

  • A set of bronze bison sculptures created by Grand Island artist Gary Staab stopped at UNL outside Morrill Hall Saturday as part of a 1,600-mile journey to the Smithsonian. The sculptures will next visit Iowa City and Chicago.  KOLN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A large wildfire burned 100,000 acres near Jeffrey Lake Saturday as 30 to 40 crews used burnouts to limit its spread, while officials in Lincoln County ordered evacuations and closed key roads. Emergency management urged residents to avoid the area and follow safety instructions.  KOLN
  • Wildfire crews near Jeffrey Lake are using burnouts to contain the Cottonwood Fire, which charred about 100,000 acres by Saturday afternoon. Evacuation orders remain in effect in parts of Lincoln County + officials urge residents to avoid closed roads.  KNOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Pillen visited wildfire areas Saturday as multiple fires burned an estimated 600,000+ acres, with one death confirmed and several counties declared under a state of emergency. He urged residents to follow evacuation orders and said firefighters, National Guard troops and crews worked to protect communities.  Nebraska Examiner
  • Lincoln Fire & Rescue sent 11 certified wildfire responders on Saturday evening to aid in western Nebraska fires—at the request of Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird. The team will support efforts until the situation stabilizes.  KOLN

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Lincoln Southwest Silver Hawks captured their first NSAA Class A Boys State Basketball title when they beat defending champion Papio South 57-53 on Saturday, Mar. 14 at Pinnacle Bank Arena — overcoming a slow start with key plays to seal the win.  KFOR
  • Ashland-Greenwood secured its second straight state championship after defeating Douglas County West on March 14 in Lincoln. Senior Derek Tonjes led the team with 14 points and six rebounds as the Bluejays clinched their fourth title in the last five seasons.  Nebraska Now
