COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kevin McCaffrey completed his third 50-mile ultra-marathon on Sunday at Holmes Lake, running 22 laps in a 12-hour period to raise funds for local causes using donations collected at the event- he organizes monthly runs with Fleet Feet Lincoln that support nonprofits like Girls on the Run.  Lincoln Journal Star

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A rollover crash in northeast Lincoln on Dorothy Drive and Baldwin Avenue just before 8 a.m. sent three people to the hospital with minor injuries (one car flipped and may have run a stop sign) as police investigate the incident.  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Experts explained that college tuition and fees have risen over the past three decades due to inflation and higher operating costs while federal funding has dropped. They advised students to research degrees with a strong return on investment—such as attending in-state or community colleges—to help manage costs.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Legislature advanced State Sen. Eliot Bostar’s resolution that will let voters choose whether to legalize mobile sports betting in 2026 as gaming operators can offer bets while revenue funds property tax relief. Lawmakers will debate the proposal soon—some senators support the proactive plan and others oppose it.  Nebraska Examiner
  • Lincoln City Council discussed a proposal on Monday to tow vehicles for reckless driving, with a first offense resulting in immediate release upon fee payment and a second offense holding the vehicle for 10 days—Lincoln police support the change while the ACLU raised concerns about bypassing court procedures. A vote on the proposed changes will take place at a future City Council meeting.  KOLN
  • Lincoln City Council heard testimony on proposed changes to the municipal code aimed at reducing dangerous driving during a public hearing Monday afternoon. The changes would update definitions for racing and race tracks and add penalties for disorderly vehicles—including impoundment for a first offense and a ten-day hold with additional fees for repeat offenses—and the council will vote on the changes on March 31.  KFOR
  • Norris Public Power District is nearing the final stages of restoring power for 940 customers after last week’s blizzard—126 linemen are working in Seward and Saline Counties while eight focus on Lancaster County. Lincoln Electric System has provided mutual aid—at the peak the outage affected about 60% of Norris’ customers.  KOLN
  • Lawmakers in Lincoln are waiting for an amendment on LB 677 to set up rules for a voter-approved medical cannabis law. Sen. Hansen wants to include a system that tracks medicine and defines who can get it—if the bill gets five votes, it will move to a full vote.  Nebraska Examiner
