COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new downtown cat adoption space opened — letting visitors spend time with cats before taking them home. The center aims to help Lincoln residents make informed adoption decisions.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • A community panel on March 24 examined Lincoln’s child care crisis as several centers closed and rising costs affected families; officials warned that pending bills could leave 2,500 families without support (Lincoln Littles reported significant losses in care spots).  Nebraska News Service

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eighteen-year-old country music star Ty Myers will perform at Pinewood Bowl Theater on Sept. 4 as part of The Legal Tour, which runs from June 11 to Nov. 21. Pre-sales open Tuesday, March 31 with public ticket sales starting Friday, April 3.  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln High School is hosting a world music drumming class today as part of Music in Our Schools Month, where students learn West African music and teamwork under teacher Jill Oetken (who studied drumming in Ghana).  KOLN
  • The Nebraska State FFA Convention opened Wednesday at UNL’s East Campus Union where high school students took part in agriculture tasks including scavenger hunts and floral arrangements. Seniors (Jager Leichleiter and Landon Miller) earned awards for completing 500 FFA hours, and the event runs through Friday.  KOLN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nebraska fire officials advised residents to clear debris and water lawns to reduce wildfire risks as dry conditions and strong winds continue across the state. They urged homeowners to trim vegetation and move firewood and propane away from structures.  KNOP
  • Lincoln held a statewide tornado drill on Wednesday as part of severe weather awareness week, testing sirens, tone alerts, and broadcast procedures. Lancaster County’s Emergency Management director advised residents to seek interior shelter and to complete a participation form online if they missed the drill.  KFOR

  • The Nebraska School of Performing Arts offers Dance for Parkinson’s, a 10-week program held every Wednesday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. through April 8 that helps participants improve mobility and enjoy creative movement in Lincoln; caregivers attend free (scholarships are available).  Fox Nebraska
