- ➤ Students from Lighthouse's after-school program near 27th and N streets celebrated its 35th year on Tuesday by delivering handmade bracelets with encouraging words to patients at Nebraska Hematology-Oncology. - ➤ The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that rural homeowners and farmers are urged to check their pivot irrigation systems after several reports of stolen wire have led to thousands of dollars in losses and advised residents to report suspicious activity by calling 402-441-6500. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A new report from the Center for Rural Affairs shows that direct sales of locally grown food jumped 84% for consumers and 45% for retailers and food hubs. The report said that if every local bought $5 of farm food each week, farm income would get a boost of $512 million. Nebraska Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lincoln Police and CenterPointe launched a Co-Responder Program that sends mental health experts with officers to answer calls during mental health crises. Two co-responders began on March 3 and a third will start in early April—local officials say the three-year program is funded by a $550,000 federal grant and matching city funds and is expected to improve responses. - ➤ Roughly $100 million meant for local projects will not come this year because a temporary funding law kept the government running without adding new funds—this loss delays new equipment for the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and pushes back improvements at the University of Nebraska Innovation Campus and a local water project on the Santee Sioux Nation Reservation. - ➤ Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers is urging residents to check if they qualify for compensation for generic drug purchases made between May 2009 and December 2019 as Nebraska joins 50 other states in seeking a $39.1 million settlement with Apotex—accused of inflating prices and reducing competition. The settlement was filed in U.S. District Court in Hartford after the coalition obtained all required signatures. KOLN
