COMMUNITY NEWS

  • StarTran is hosting the Stuff the Bus event on April 12 and April 13 to help Friendship Home provide safe shelter and crisis services for domestic violence survivors in Lincoln. Residents can donate new comforter and sheet sets, personal care items, kitchenware and nonperishable foods from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations.  KOLN

CRIME NEWS

  • Lincoln police arrested Tyson Castaneda, 25, after he chased construction workers with a knife at a south Lincoln jobsite on Wednesday before 4:50 p.m.; he was charged with terroristic threats in court on Thursday as witnesses said the workers climbed to a roof to escape and he allegedly made racist remarks.  KOLN
  • A Lincoln man was arrested on Wednesday after police executed a search warrant at his north Lincoln home near North 15th Street and Hilltop Road where officers found baggies containing drugs and a loaded gun within reach of his children; he faces multiple gun and drug charges.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early voting is underway for the Lincoln City Primary Election scheduled for April 8 where voters will decide whether to extend the Lincoln on the Move quarter cent sales tax that funds street improvements. The May 6 General Election ballot will include a housing discrimination ban and races for City Council, the Airport Authority, and the Public Schools Board of Education.  KOLN
  • The Nebraska Supreme Court heard arguments Thursday over Lincoln’s executive order and city ordinances banning firearms in parks & public spaces. The hearing featured exchanges from the Nebraska Firearms Owners Association and the city attorney’s office, and further updates are expected on 10/11.  KOLN
  • Lincoln Transportation and Utilities announced that three streets will close for utility work, with Holdrege Street closing today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., West Cuming Street closing beginning April 7 until April 18, and Westbound South Street closing April 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes—27th to Vine to 33rd, Northwest 38th to Air Park Road to Northwest 48th, and 40th to Normal—as the timeline may change with weather.  KOLN
  • State Sen. Rick Holdcroft tasked his seven-member committee with choosing a few debilitating conditions from lists used in Iowa and other states for a voter-approved medical cannabis bill—he said lawmakers may delay licensing deadlines to align the law with what voters intended. Advocates worry that narrowing the list could undermine the measure passed by voters.  Nebraska Examiner
  • Former Senate candidate Dan Osborn is exploring a nonpartisan run against U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts in the midterms after his 2024 populist campaign against U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer nearly upset a safe race. He raised $14 million and said he wants to challenge big money by replacing a billionaire with a mechanic — a promise aimed at giving Nebraskans a fresh choice.  Nebraska Examiner
