COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Scooter’s Coffee is hosting a drive-thru event with local volleyball stars Bergen Reilly and Andi Jackson on Monday, April 13 from 4 to 5 p.m. at two locations on Pine Lake Road and Hill Street, where customers who purchase coffee get a free volleyball (while supplies last).  KOLN
  • More than 300 pinwheels were placed on the Centennial Mall lawn Friday for Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month as 25 local agencies hosted a rally on Capitol steps. The display highlights a network that helps families with early intervention services (including support from CEDARS Youth Services).  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A few dozen people gathered at Branched Oak Observatory (near Raymond) Friday night to watch the Artemis II splashdown that ended a historic moon mission and sparked a shared moment of learning among the attendees.  Nebraska Now
  • Hector Estrada, a UNL student who shared Holocaust stories with peers in Taylor, was honored with a national Anne Frank award recognizing his efforts.  Lincoln Journal Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, Apr. 10, state senators and registered lobbyists gathered at the University of Nebraska Coliseum for a friendly end-of-session basketball game. Lobbyists won 43-22 and participants said the tradition helped them relax and see each other as people.  Nebraska Examiner
  • Lincoln Transportation and Utilities announced that 14th Street between N and P will close Monday for Project O Street work—closure continues until fall with a pause in July for a local festival, and a detour via N Street to 12th Street to P Street is in effect for visitors.  KOLN

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nebraska forward Rienk Mast has been invited to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, which starts on April 15 and gives top seniors a chance to show their skills before scouts. He is the sixth Husker to attend after being named to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Midseason List.  KNOP
  • Nebraska Basketball forward Rienk Mast will play in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, where top seniors will be evaluated by scouts from April 15 through April 18. This event gives him a chance to showcase his skills for a professional future.  KOLN
  • Lincoln Pius X hired Nikolas Miroshnichenko as its new head baseball coach starting in 2027 and he will also teach English at the school. The former Husker earned a letter with Nebraska and coached in California.  KFOR
