Good morning, Lincoln. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 12th of April.

CRIME NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Lincoln Police Department warned the community about the potential arrival of carfentanil in Lincoln — a synthetic opioid 10,000 times stronger than morphine that can cause fatal overdoses from even a small exposure. The drug has been seen in blue pills in Omaha but has not been detected locally as LPD continues to monitor the situation.  Nebraska Now
  • A Lincoln woman was arrested on Thursday after firing several shots in her ground-floor apartment (near 19th and Knox) around 8:45 p.m., with police saying she threatened a neighbor while a handgun and cartridges were found in the unit.  KOLN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird dedicated a historical marker on Friday in Irvingdale Park at 20th and Van Dorn streets to honor local nature writer Loren Eiseley—who collected aquatic life as a boy that later inspired his noted works. Lincoln City Libraries is hosting a monthlong display on his life at the Eiseley Branch Library.  Nebraska Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The arena inside Bob Devaney Sports Center will soon be named after longtime volleyball coach John Cook after the Nebraska Board of Regents approved the change on Friday. The project will add a bronze statue, updated wayfinding signage and interior renaming at a donor-funded cost of $400,000—plans to honor his 25 seasons.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nebraska State Patrol reported that in the first 100 days of 2025 its troopers stopped 318 drivers for speeds of 100 mph or greater (a 52% increase from past averages), raising safety concerns on local roadways. Troopers said they will continue patrolling as traffic grows with warmer weather to keep roads safe.  Nebraska Now
  • The University of Nebraska Board of Regents voted Friday to remove DEI language from its bylaws to meet new federal guidelines and keep health funding grants — some students now worry the change may lower support for minority programs and enrollment. Student groups say the removal makes them feel less valued.  Nebraska Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Governor Pillen and state health officials outlined Nebraska’s response plan at a Friday press conference, stressing that while no measles cases have been reported locally, residents should get the MMR vaccine to stay safe amid a national outbreak with 750 cases and 79 hospitalizations. Officials advised anyone showing symptoms or planning travel to affected areas to isolate and contact a healthcare provider—especially if they suspect exposure.  KOLN
