COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Lincoln nonprofit—founded in 2005—grew from a hobbyist group into a diverse community focused on historical sword fighting, now drawing larger classes at local centers. The group began offering a 12-week course at Southeast Community College and plans to expand training as more residents join.  Lincoln Journal Star

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Friday, a deadly two-vehicle crash at 56th and Fletcher in north Lincoln left one person dead and police and fire rescue arrived at about 5:45 a.m. to investigate the scene and ask drivers to take alternate routes.  KFOR

CRIME NEWS

  • A 40-year-old Lincoln woman, Nakea Dorsey, was arrested on Thursday for a robbery at the Kwik Shop near 40th and A streets at 2:30 a.m.—she is accused of threatening a store employee with a deadly weapon while demanding cash, and no injuries were reported.  KOLN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Art advocates in Lincoln saved the Pershing Mural from demolition and developed a free curriculum with 17 lesson plans for Lincoln Public Schools that explore its history and design. They continue raising funds to reinstall the mosaic at Wyuka Cemetery this summer—depending on private donations and a matching offer if funds are received by May 31.  Lincoln Journal Star

  • At its meeting Tuesday, the Lincoln Board of Education will appoint Mara Krivohlavek to fill the District 5 seat left vacant after longtime board member Lanny Boswell died—officials said the decision follows board protocol.  Lincoln Journal Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Near South Neighborhood Association will hold an interactive tree walk along Goodhue Boulevard today from 9:30 a.m. to noon—certified arborists will explain the pause in the city's plan to remove and replace 24 trees. Residents will gather at the Grace Chapel parking lot at 15th and A streets before the walk begins at 10 a.m. to learn how to care for Lincoln's aging tree canopy.  Lincoln Journal Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled Friday that the Legislature acted within its power when it passed expanded parole eligibility standards in LB 50 to ease prison crowding—overturning a lower court ruling. The court explained that the law changes how the sentence is served—without reducing the original punishment.  Nebraska Examiner
