CRIME NEWS

  • Lincoln Animal Control warned residents on Monday of a scam targeting pet owners who posted about lost pets online—scammers using the official phone number claimed to have found the pet and asked for payment via a link or cash app even though there is no fee to file a lost pet report.  Nebraska Now
  • Lincoln police arrested 38-year-old Reynaldo Castillo on suspicion of second-degree assault, possession of a controlled substance and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony following a stabbing near South First and M streets on Saturday—39-year-old victim received treatment for stab wounds to his leg and arm and is now stable at a local hospital.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early voting ballots for the May 6th Lincoln election were mailed to voters who requested them. Ballots must be received by 8 p.m. May 6th—voters may also cast ballots in person at the election office during extended hours on April 25th, April 30th, May 3rd, and May 5th.  Nebraska Now
  • The Lancaster County Election Commissioner’s Office has begun mailing early vote ballots for the Lincoln General Election on May 6 to voters who requested them by last Friday. Lincoln voters can also pick up ballots in-person during extended hours—ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. on May 6, and vote-by-mail applications need to be received by 6 p.m. on April 25.  KOLN
  • State Senator Jane Raybould of Lincoln and Senator Stan Clouse of Kearney reached a compromise on LB 258 that will replace cost-of-living annual increases with a fixed 1.75% rise starting in 2027—an effort to lower business costs while critics say it diverges from the voter-approved plan from 2022.  Nebraska Examiner

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is telling residents to protect themselves from tick bites and diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever by wearing light clothes, using EPA-registered repellent, and doing regular tick checks. It also suggests treating clothing with permethrin and walking in the middle of trails to help keep people and pets safe.  KNOP
  • Today, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services warns Lincoln residents to protect against tick bites that can spread diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis, and Alpha-Gal Syndrome.
