  • On Wednesday, Blue Star Moms of Nebraska celebrated 90 high school seniors who chose to enlist during a ceremony at the Round the Bend Ballroom in Ashland (from 40 Nebraska cities) as hundreds quietly listened to bagpipes. The event, now in its fourth year, signals youth readiness for military commitment.  Nebraska Now
  • UPS driver Kurt Meyer in Waverly celebrated his 60th on Wednesday and will retire Friday after 35 years of service. The community honored him with signs, cards (including his favorite Milk Duds) and kind messages for his dedication.  KOLN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Lincoln’s unemployment rate climbed to 3.2% in February from January’s 3.1%, while Nebraska’s preliminary statewide rate held at 3.1% & remained below the national average of 4.4%, based on numbers released on Apr. 22.  KFOR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and local leaders reported 76% progress on Lincoln’s Climate Action Plan during Earth Day Wednesday. The city reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 30% since 2011 and will seek new grants to overcome federal policy hurdles.  KOLN
  • At an Earth Day event yesterday, local leaders reported that 76% of their climate plan actions were underway or complete and that emissions dropped 30% so far.  Lincoln Journal Star

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lincoln Stars alternate Captain Alex Pelletier was named USHL Forward of the Year after scoring 48 goals and 37 assists in 59 games. The team returns home Friday at the Ice Box to host game three of the Western Conference semi-finals.  KFOR
  • On Tuesday night in Lawrence, Kan, No. 20 Nebraska baseball lost 9 to 7 against No. 16 Kansas; the Huskers had seven runs on 10 hits with one error while Kansas earned 12 hits. Nebraska will resume Big Ten play Friday when it meets Illinois in Champaign.  KFOR
  • Nebraska softball beat the Omaha Mavericks last Tuesday at Connie Claussen Field 11-4 with Ava Kuszak recording a career-high four hits & four RBIs. The Huskers improved to 37-6 and will play the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday at Bowlin Stadium.  KFOR
  • Nebraska native Kaci Lickteig ran in the Boston Marathon on Monday as a healing tribute after losing her grandmother, setting a personal record. Lickteig, who has completed over 100 marathons, ran with her mom and embraced the crowd's support.  Nebraska Now
