CRIME NEWS

  • A woman was shot while sitting on her couch when drive-by gunfire hit her home Tuesday night near 38th and Briarwood Avenue in southeast Lincoln—police said the suspect fled but was later arrested in Alvo and the woman had a non-life-threatening injury.  KOLN
  • Lincoln Police reported that on April 20 a couple shoplifted items from a Walmart near 84th and Fremont using a silver Oldsmobile Alero—while on March 31 three suspects burgled an apartment complex workshop near 46th and Old Cheney and stole over $4,300 in tools.  KFOR
  • Tony Pierce (50) appeared in Lancaster County Court where a judge found probable cause to try him for motor vehicle homicide after he rear-ended a patrol car on U.S. Highway 77 on April 12 that led to Officer Ross Bartlett’s death; his arraignment is set for May 21.  Nebraska Now

  • Nebraska farmers are investing $3.1 billion to plant corn this season amid uncertain market conditions. USDA estimates indicate growers will plant 10.6 million acres in the coming months (a change influenced by the president's trade agenda) and will not see returns until harvest.  Fox Nebraska

  • Dr. Neal Schnoor has been named the chancellor candidate at the University of Nebraska at Kearney after a year-long search and he brings over 30 years of education experience with deep local ties. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Pillen held a press conference Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. with officials — emergency management, fire, and agriculture — to update on the Plum Creek Fire that burned an estimated 24,000 acres—about 37.5 square miles—and cost farmers cattle. He also discussed a possible statewide fire ban and said new containment estimates would come at least by Thursday.  KOLN
  • A bill to extend SNAP eligibility advanced to its final legislative round after lawmakers debated and defeated a hostile amendment on Wednesday—ensuring the expanded income guidelines remain in place for food benefits. The measure, introduced by State Sen. Dan Quick, could allow over 4,000 families to keep receiving assistance and now awaits a full legislative vote.  Nebraska Examiner
  • Senators and school administrators are questioning the plan to lower the retirement age for school employees to 55 as part of LB 645, a measure that could boost teachers’ take-home pay and save extra money — the proposal may be delayed until next year if today's debate leads to its withdrawal.  Nebraska Examiner
