COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lincoln invites older adults to participate in Aging Partners Events from April 28 through May 4—activities include card games, exercise classes, art activities and movie showings. Round-trip transportation for senior center rides is available by appointment.  KOLN
  • A red magnolia tree was planted at Nebraska Wesleyan University to honor former track athlete Eric Smoyer, who died from cancer on April 22, 2024. Family and friends gathered on Saturday, April 26, 2025, to dedicate the tree at a spot between the indoor track and outdoor track—places where he spent much time as a student athlete.  Lincoln Journal Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nebraska’s projected state budget deficit grew by $190 million after the economic forecasting board revised its numbers, and lawmakers must act before May 15 using spending cuts, new revenue, or state reserves & prepare for tough decisions.  Nebraska Examiner
  • U.S. Rep. Don Bacon confirmed Friday he was considering retiring and will decide with his family this summer whether to run again—his decision comes after a strong fundraising quarter. State Sen. John Cavanaugh is exploring a run while Denise Powell also weighs a bid—each gathering support in a competitive race for the seat.  KOLN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal health officials canceled nearly $100 million in COVID-related grants meant to support local programs for vaccinations and disease tracking, leaving Nebraska health departments with less money to protect the community—officials say the cuts, effective March 24, force them to pull funds from other programs and could delay responses to outbreaks like measles. Nebraska leaders now face tough choices as they work to cover essential health services with fewer resources.  KOLN

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Nebraska’s Ty Robinson with the 111th pick in the NFL Draft’s fourth round. The 6-foot-5 defensive tackle—who set a Nebraska record by playing 60 games and recorded 48 tackles in 2024 while running a 4.83-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine—will join his former teammate Cam Jurgens in Philadelphia.  Nebraska Now
  • On Saturday, three Nebraska teams kicked off their 2025 season at the first Husker Games in Lincoln as the football team held a scrimmage with Team Red defeating Team Black 70—30, the soccer team won 3—2 over Wyoming, and the volleyball team swept Kansas 4—0 with a match against South Dakota State set for May 3.  Nebraska Now
  • Former Husker tight end Thomas Fidone II was selected by the New York Giants with the 219th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He finished his final season at Nebraska with 373 receiving yards and four touchdowns (joining Ty Robinson as the only other Husker picked).  Nebraska Now
