COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Meadowlane pool project in Lincoln got a $400,000 grant from the Lancaster County Visitors Improvement Fund, reaching 70% of its $875,000 goal as contractors finalize repair plans for electrical, plumbing, filters, concrete and pool surface; board members say the boost renews hope for reopening as a community summer hub.  Nebraska Now
  • Eventide launched a new website to support its Meals on Wheels program that serves nearly 300 seniors every weekday. Donations can be made ahead of Give to Lincoln Day on Thursday, May 28.  KOLN

CULTURE NEWS

  • On April 27, 1902, J. Sterling Morton, founder of Arbor Day, died at his son’s house in Illinois. Born in New York, he moved to Nebraska in 1854, edited the Nebraska City News, and later held government roles (including Acting Governor and Agriculture Secretary).  KNOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mid-Plains Community College will honor 463 area high school seniors with honor cords at their spring graduations—recognizing credit earned while in high school, including 14 who will graduate with an associate degree.  KNOP
  • The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will confer over 3,800 degrees next week at its commencement ceremonies (the highest number yet) in Lincoln, marking a record milestone for the campus.  Lincoln Journal Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USDA announced the FSA is accepting Emergency Conservation Program disaster assistance applications for producers affected by wildfires in Nebraska. Applications open Monday, April 27 and run through Friday, June 26, and producers should contact their local FSA office for eligibility details.  KNOP
  • Gov. Jim Pillen will hold a news conference Monday at 9 a.m. in Lincoln where he and Veterans' Affairs Director John Hilgert will announce an initiative to honor nearly 2,400 living Korean War veterans.  KNOP
  • The City of Lincoln announced road closures for three races this weekend: the Mayor’s Run will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday on the south side of the State Capitol and the marathon and half-marathon will start just before 7 a.m. Sunday at 14th and Vine (LPD will provide live updates).  Nebraska Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Nebraska–Lincoln researchers developed a vaccine candidate for H5N1 bird flu that produced complete protection in mice and dairy calves during tests completed in early 2025. The team will seek funding and partnerships to advance testing for livestock and possibly humans.  KOLN

  • Nebraska clinched the weekend series with a 3-0 win over Illinois on Sunday at Illinois Field, thanks to strong pitching by Gavin Blachowicz and Ty Horn, and the Huskers return home today to face Kansas State at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.  KFOR
