- ➤ Elk Creek Mine in Johnson County is set to begin production in late 2029 with plans to produce niobium, scandium, and titanium. The project will create local jobs and use nearby suppliers. KNOP
- ➤ Gov. Pillen and Nebraska business leaders supported the amended merger application from Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern last Thursday, noting the 85 billion deal could create 1,200 new union jobs, lower freight costs, and benefit local farmers by streamlining shipments. KNOP
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Jazz in June announced its 2026 lineup Thursday, promising free concerts every Tuesday in June at the Sheldon Sculpture Garden featuring top national artists and local favorites. Food trucks open at 5 p.m. and live music starts at 7 p.m. as attendees bring their own blankets or lawn chairs. KOLN
- ➤ Gray Media and 10/11 launched the Star Spangled Sing Off contest on Friday, May 1, to celebrate America's 250th birthday. - ➤ On Friday, National School Lunch Hero Day recognized Lincoln Northwest’s cafeteria staff. Kitchen manager Ericka Miller said the 11-person team prepares meals for the high school and four elementary schools (baked goods, taco meat, and spaghetti sauce) to support students. KOLN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Attorney General Mike Hilgers announced that the $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family has gone into effect today, directing $19.7 million to support addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery programs + transferring Purdue’s manufacturing operations to Knoa Pharma LLC. KOLN
- ➤ Nebraska Task Force One conducted a large-scale tornado simulation drill at the Lincoln Fire and Rescue training facility near 3rd and South on Thursday, Apr. 30, where team members practiced debris removal and wall shoring to prepare for an EF4 event. Smaller drills occur every quarter. KFOR
- ➤ The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce issued a statement Friday saying that a proposed minimum wage increase may harm small businesses and job opportunities. A public hearing will be held Monday, May 4 at City Council to review Councilman James Michael Bowers’ proposal. KOLN
