CRIME NEWS

  • Lincoln police are investigating a robbery and assault that occurred Sunday around 6:30 p.m. near 17th and Washington where a 43-year-old man suffered facial injuries after a suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Richard Schaub, repeatedly kicked and punched him when a vehicle stopped nearby—police served a warrant on Wednesday at Schaub’s apartment and recovered a switchblade, loaded handgun, suspected drugs, a scale and cash.  KFOR
  • 23-year-old Derrick Conley from Lincoln was sentenced in federal court on Thursday to six and a half years in prison & a three-year supervised release for being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition after officers recovered a ghost gun during a 2024 disturbance.  KOLN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Yesterday, Black Hills Energy asked the Nebraska Public Service Commission to allow a base rate hike in natural gas—if approved, residential bills will rise by $6.27 with the new rates going into effect by the first half of 2026.  Nebraska Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scott Middle School held its annual Make-A-Difference Fair on Thursday where sixth graders researched a cause and raised money for local nonprofits as part of a humanities project. The students raised about ($12,000) to support charities tackling hunger, cancer, and animal welfare.  Lincoln Journal Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Jim Pillen has temporarily waived federal hours of service rules for truckers hauling fuel in Nebraska amid a fuel shortage. The executive order is effective immediately and remains until May 15 at 11:59 p.m.  KNOP
  • State lawmakers in Nebraska advanced a public safety package on Thursday—this change would allow children as young as 11 to be detained and bundles parts of nine bills together. Some critics say the proposal may lead to harsh rules for young people and call for more focus on rehabilitation.  Nebraska Examiner
  • Lincoln and Omaha city officials now have the option to align their elections with statewide contests after a legislative cleanup bill led by State Sen. Rita Sanders passed 42-0. The change, which will not affect the 2025 elections, may help reduce election costs and voter fatigue — a decision that will come through a charter amendment vote.  Nebraska Examiner
