  • Nearly 15 Lincoln Fire & Rescue units responded just before 1:40 p.m. on Sunday to a fire near 27th and Van Dorn where an unattended solar stove burning leaves sparked a blaze—causing $400,000 in damage and forcing residents to relocate.  Nebraska Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At Glacial Till Vineyard and Winery near Palmyra, geologists and engineers drilled deep core samples that uncovered layers of glacial till, loess and sand not seen for 640,000 years — the findings may improve how experts predict underground water flow. A three-day seminar brought together professionals to compare samples and create a standard language for describing Nebraska’s unique geology.  Lincoln Journal Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction of the new prison north of Lincoln is behind schedule and state officials now expect the total cost to exceed the $350 million budget, with $33.8 million already spent on early work. Bids began in April and will run until June 3 (to help determine the final cost), which may delay completion further than planned.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • Historian Jim McKee traced Lincoln’s police history from early community protection to a modern department with 353 officers – his account details milestones like the first elected constable and changes following the 1930 bank robbery.
