COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Channel 8 News hosted its third annual bike drive on Thursday in Lincoln from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (330 bikes were collected) and has now gathered over 1,000 bikes in three years; the bikes will be refurbished and redistributed locally. Nebraska Now
- ➤ Husker Bass Anglers will host Casting to Make a Difference at Holmes Lake this Saturday from Noon to 3:00 p.m. for K-12 kids to learn fishing with provided gear; the event, started by UNL senior Logan Greeno, aims to mentor local youth — supporting community growth. Nebraska Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska Transitional College runs a three-year program that teaches life skills like money management and self-advocacy to high school graduates with level 1 and 2 disabilities to help them gain independence. Applications are accepted year-round online and in Lincoln. Nebraska Now
- ➤ A student at Everett Elementary sprayed a classmate with keychain pepper spray during dismissal on Wednesday, prompting an immediate evacuation and health check—LPS said the student will face school consequences while families were notified. KOLN
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Facing hot, dry conditions, the city is urging residents to cut outdoor watering, noting that half the daily water supply can go to irrigation. Water system manager Tim Zach suggests turning sprinklers off automatic mode and watering only as needed to keep lawns healthy. KOLN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ After years of effort, the U.S. House passed a bill for year-round E15 on Wednesday with support from local Reps Adrian Smith, Mike Flood & Don Bacon, and the measure now moves to the Senate while state leaders plan to support the EPA’s National Fuel Waiver for summer. KOLN
- ➤ Lincoln Police Department hosted a Citizen’s Academy class Thursday where 17 residents learned about traffic tools (Lidar and radar guns) and viewed motorcycle units. The 10-week spring session, which began in early March, will end next week with a graduation class. KOLN
- ➤ A construction project on 27th Street from Nebraska Parkway to South Street will begin Tuesday and is set to finish in summer, 2027. Local residents say the work may lead to longer drives to shops and gas stations but support the needed road repairs. KOLN
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Local athletes shined at the District C-9 Track and Field Meet on Thursday in Grant. Chase County teams claimed both boys' & girls' titles while several earned spots for next week's state meet in Omaha. KNOP
- ➤ Season ticket holders for Husker softball will sit in general admission this weekend due to donor-based seating at Bowlin Stadium — many longtime fans are upset by losing their regular spots. Athletic department representative Tyler Kai said he will explore seating improvements for future events. KNOP
- ➤ MeTV Nebraska will air the AAPB Game of the Week on Wednesday nights & feature three Lincoln Saltdogs games and the All-Star Game live from Haymarket Park in July. Local viewers can tune in via their preferred platforms. KNOP
