- ➤ Lincoln’s Hope Venture—founded nearly 15 years ago by former teacher Cynci Peterson—is a nonprofit that supports over 30 global projects which have helped more than 100,000 people get clean water, food, and education in Asia and Africa. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Crews battled a multi-vehicle fire near Menards at 91st and Nebraska Parkway on Thursday at 11:45 a.m. and heavy damage was reported to at least three vehicles — officials are still investigating the fire's cause. Nebraska Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Five Lincoln Northeast High School students built a 1,200-square-foot house — with a detached garage — in 88 days in Belmont to help a family in need through a local affordable housing program. The project, the 31st built under the initiative, was completed with support from several local organizations and gave students valuable hands-on construction experience. KOLN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska lawmakers approved an $11 billion two-year budget on a 37—11 vote and sent it to Gov. Jim Pillen’s desk in Lincoln. Gov. Pillen said the balanced budget will fund education, property tax relief, elimination of the developmental disability waitlist and nuclear security while addressing a $432 million deficit. - ➤ Lincoln’s largest construction project, a two and a half mile stretch of West A Street, is set to finish this summer after more than five years of work—upgrades include new lanes, wider sidewalks, and roundabouts to boost safety despite delays from rising supply costs and necessary utility fixes. - ➤ The city plans to buy and renovate the Centrum at 11th and O streets to serve as the new downtown library and replace the old Bennett Martin library. The $46 million project, which costs 35% less than other alternatives, will need City Council approval and town hall meetings before design starts and construction begins next year for a spring 2028 opening. - ➤ NDOT announced that law enforcement agencies will enforce seatbelt use during a two-week campaign as its data shows usage rose to 80% last year while 67% of crash fatalities did not wear a seatbelt—fifty-three agencies received grants for traffic safety. Lincoln police will take a zero-tolerance approach during the campaign, building on nearly 4,000 citations issued in previous efforts. KOLN
