CRIME NEWS

  • Southeast Community College closed all campuses on Friday after receiving an online threat and Lincoln police questioned the person allegedly responsible + determined there was no further danger, while continuing education classes proceeded as scheduled.  KNOP

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Farmer Larry Hudkins said his crops + pastures are suffering amid an extreme drought affecting over two-thirds of the state, and he may face $300 to $400 per acre replanting costs or cattle reduction if rain fails to arrive. He hopes a multi-million-dollar rain this weekend brings relief.  Nebraska Now
  • Firefighters in the Loess Canyons contained the Cottonwood Fire in March by partnering with a prescribed burn group to lower fuel loads. Local experts say planned burns help manage invasive cedar growth and may prevent larger wildfires as weather conditions change.  KOLN
  • Douglas County officials say Lincoln’s tornado sirens can mislead residents during storms because they provide little guidance on where to take shelter.   • Mayor Gaylor Baird dedicated the Lincoln-Lancaster Health Department clinic as the Pat Lopez Health Clinic on May 15 (3131 O St.) to honor former Health Director Pat Lopez’s decades of public service.  KFOR
  • A Lincoln clinic was renamed to honor the late Pat Lopez, a longtime public health leader who dedicated decades to service. Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and health director Kerry Kernen (with family) gathered on the north steps of the health department Friday morning to unveil the new building name.  KOLN
  • Health officials said two MV Hondius passengers, medically cleared in Atlanta, arrived this afternoon at the National Quarantine Unit in Omaha, raising the total number of quarantined patients to 18.  Nebraska Now
  • Two more passengers from the MV Hondius, where a hantavirus outbreak is underway, arrived at UNMC’s National Quarantine Unit Friday afternoon after being medically cleared. The federally funded unit (featuring 20 rooms of 300 sqft each and negative air pressure) will monitor exposed individuals.  KOLN
