CRIME NEWS

  • Lincoln police investigated a possible arson case reported Thursday night near South 20th and J when a 26-year-old woman saw a suspect run away after starting a fire in her window well and officers later found burnt electrical wiring and what appeared to be burnt animal feces at the scene.  KOLN
  • Chudier Tut was sentenced Friday to 15 to 20 years in prison for second-degree assault for his role in a downtown Lincoln shooting that injured four people — his other charges were dismissed in a plea deal and he already served one year, making him eligible for parole in seven years.  Nebraska Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Nebraska charitable foundation has expanded its WanderNebraska project to promote visits to 213 lesser-known museums, libraries and sites across the state. The program began with 27 sites and received 7,000 booklet requests from 18 other states, and it offers prizes for visiting 10 or 25 sites—while also providing training sessions to help small museums boost their marketing.  KNOP

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The LES board voted Friday to raise rates by 4% starting July 1 — adding about $4 to the average household bill — to fund new energy production by buying 20 megawatts of hydropower and installing two new natural gas turbines. The city council must still approve the plan to ensure grid reliability and help avoid even higher costs later.  Nebraska Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early this year, Nebraska Public Power District paid about $5 million for 202 acres of rural Lancaster County land from executives who work for the company — a price nearly five times the land’s appraised value. NPPD leaders said the purchase is needed for future power plant expansion near Sheldon Station — a step to meet growing energy demands.  KOLN
  • State Auditor Mike Foley said the Wheat Board spent nearly $17,000 on meals between January 2023 and February 2025, including a $847.47 dinner at a high-end restaurant where each person paid far more than the allowed per diem—Foley said officials should have followed proper reimbursement rules.  Nebraska Now
