COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 50 local vendors, artists and entertainers gathered Sunday afternoon at the Uni Place Creative District Makers Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2649 N. 48th St.—this is the first year the district has managed the event and expanded it to two blocks.  KOLN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 4:40 p.m. on Sunday, Lincoln Fire & Rescue responded to a vehicle fire that spread to an industrial building at Capital Concrete near Fourth and A streets — the cause of the fire and any injuries remain unknown.  Nebraska Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business owners near 33rd and A streets pushed for zoning changes to boost business flexibility and add housing options. The Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission unanimously recommended changes for a planned unit development — the City Council will vote on the plan next.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • Lincoln-based Speedway Motors is suing Light Helmets—claiming the company still owes $377,290 for facemasks produced from a custom order dating back to 2019. The suit says Light Helmets did not pay invoices within 30 days for orders placed in August 2022 and seeks damages with 12% annual interest.  Lincoln Journal Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Norris School District was awarded $140 thousand from the United States Tennis Association—plus $12 thousand from the USTA Missouri Valley—to build its first tennis facility at the Titan Activities Sports Complex. The new facility will give the girls’ tennis team a home court and support future community and boys’ tennis programs, with the project expected to be ready for summer activities.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lancaster County board ended its hiring freeze on May 1 after a county attorney’s legal opinion stated the board lacked authority to restrict hiring for elected officials’ departments — the freeze, which began in February to reduce a $3.4 million budget shortfall, was lifted as departments prepared to fill needed positions before the fiscal year’s end.  Lincoln Journal Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Diane Simard, a Lincoln native with breast cancer, is setting up special mental health help for cancer patients by training future psychologists at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Psychology—she wants more people to talk about the struggles that come with cancer.  Nebraska Now
