GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Legislature unanimously voted to confirm Bryan Waugh as the next superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol on Thursday morning. He will take over from Colonel John Bolduc when he starts his new role on Monday, June 2.  KOLN
  • Governor Pillen signed the two-year state budget covering 2025 to 2027 on May 21 and issued line item vetoes—reducing the State Supreme Court’s budget increase, shifting Fire Marshal funding, and lowering public health appropriations—measures that addressed a $432 million shortfall and preserved tax relief for Nebraskans.  KFOR
  • Gov. Pillen’s office delivered his line-item vetoes for LB 261 and LB 264 after the May 21 deadline, which caused the bills to become law without the intended vetoes. His office said that legal procedures were followed — and he will consult with the Attorney General on next steps.  KOLN
  • Lincoln Parks and Recreation delayed the opening of nine city pools scheduled for Monday because the forecast does not show a high of 70 degrees — if the weather improves, the pools will open Tuesday, otherwise Wednesday. The pools are set to operate from 1 to 6 p.m. with family swim nights starting on June 2.  Nebraska Now
  • Gov. Jim Pillen vetoed $14.5 million in general fund spending from the approved budget for fiscal years 2025-27—83% of which was allocated to the Supreme Court—and he said the move was needed for fiscal restraint. Lawmakers in the Appropriations Committee will soon decide if they will override the veto with at least 30 votes required.  Nebraska Examiner
