EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ More than 2,000 students gathered on Friday at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the 41st Annual Science Olympiad National Tournament—teams of grades 6 to 12 compete in STEM events and five high school seniors received $10,000 scholarships. - ➤ Lincoln police will enforce a new ordinance this Memorial Day weekend that lets officers impound vehicles for street racing and reckless driving—additional patrols will cover O Street from 17th to 84th streets, issuing warnings for first offenses and towing repeat offenders with fees and a 10-day hold. - ➤ Two appointees from Governor Jim Pillen testified before the General Affairs Committee on May 23 to help set rules for medical cannabis—Monica Oldenburg received a 5—3 vote while the committee split 4—4 for Lorelle Mueting, with recommendations now heading to the Clerk for further legislative review. - ➤ Governor Pillen signed LB 261 and LB 264—each with four line item vetoes—but the package arrived after the midnight deadline so the vetoes do not take effect. The governor’s office is consulting with the Attorney General’s Office and will decide on next steps soon. KFOR
