COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lincoln city pools reopened after six closed Monday due to crowded conditions and sunscreen buildup slowing pump filtration, Lincoln Parks and Recreation said to address safety concerns. The University Place Aquatic Center closed early but reopened the following day when capacity normalized.  KOLN
  • Two years after her father's death in the line of duty, Tiffany Yant launched Code 3 Legacy to help police families with guidance on benefits and essential steps. The training has been offered to Kearney Police and Buffalo County Sheriff and will expand to more counties in Nebraska in June.  Nebraska Now

  • Mo Java Cafe & Roasting Co., a pillar in the Uni Place Creative District for 30 years, is closing on Mondays and reducing its team due to rising food, coffee, and wage costs. The owner said customers are returning to support the business amid these changes.  Nebraska Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lincoln Transportation and Utilities hosted a cleanup event at Holmes Lake Tuesday after Memorial Day weekend, where community volunteers cleared litter left behind by park visitors (a Keep America Beautiful event) to protect water quality and wildlife.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former state lawmaker and 36-year veteran Tom Brewer will begin his ninth mission to Ukraine this week to report on active conflict zones and support humanitarian projects (like the Child of Light orphanage) while strengthening Nebraska agricultural ties.  KOLN
  • City of Lincoln has reopened eight pools after overcrowding led to early closures; however, Arnold Pool remains closed (due to mechanical issues). Family swim nights began May 26 at select locations from 6 to 8 p.m.  Nebraska Now
  • Nebraska Senate candidate Cindy Burbank may need to sue if the Lincoln Secretary of State’s Office keeps her name on the ballot after the election is certified on June 8, Nebraska AG Mike Hilgers said. Burbank planned to withdraw to help clear the path for Dan Osborn.  KNOP

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Nebraska Community Blood Bank declared a blood emergency today as overall supplies dropped below a two-day level and type O blood was nearly out. Officials urge eligible donors to schedule appointments immediately to support hospitals as summer trauma season begins.  KOLN

  • Tickets for the NCAA Baseball Lincoln Regional at Haymarket Park sold out on Tuesday after 2,900 seats were snapped up in just 10 minutes. The first regional game against South Dakota State will take place Friday, May 29 at 3:00 p.m. on ESPN+.  KOLN
  • Nebraska softball captain Jordy Frahm was named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Tuesday after helping NU win Big Ten titles and earn a Women’s College World Series spot; she is expected to join the elite group of four time NFCA First Team All-Americans when teams are announced today.  Nebraska Now
  • Nebraska athletics hired veteran strength coach Michael Chatman as director for men's basketball after Coach Fred Hoiberg announced his selection Tuesday. Chatman brings over 15 years of Division I experience from the Big Ten, SEC & Pac-12 conferences and recently served at LSU and Stanford.  Nebraska Now
