COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Parks and Recreation Department and Great Plains Trails Network completed a new trail bridge connecting Wilderness Park and Densmore Park in the Far South neighborhood by repurposing an old railroad trestle over Salt Creek on the Rock Island Trail. Crews have been renovating the trail since May 2024 and the project (costing about $621,000) received funding (from a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant and local partners) to offer park visitors a safer route.  KOLN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Three people were injured on Tuesday afternoon in downtown Lincoln when a Chrysler ran a red light and hit a Subaru at the intersection of South 14th and L streets—police said the impact caused the Subaru to roll and the Chrysler driver was cited for failing to obey a traffic signal.  Lincoln Journal Star

CRIME NEWS

  • Lincoln Police are asking for help identifying suspects after vandals damaged a house near 24th and Holdrege streets just after midnight on May 23, when one suspect was seen kicking the door and another punching it. Witnesses said both fled in two vehicles (a light-colored Pontiac Grand Prix and an unknown dark sedan) and tips can be sent anonymously via the hotline (402-475-3600).  KOLN
  • Lincoln police issued 73 citations and 77 warnings during Memorial Day weekend—impounding 7 vehicles under the new ordinance for street racing and reckless driving—while making 2 DUI arrests, including one following a Saturday crash that left one person critically injured.  Lincoln Journal Star

  • Regina Sullivan, founder of nonprofit Marvilee, hosted the All School Graduation Party at Antelope Park on Tuesday to honor high school graduates and remember her late son who died from an overdose nearly five years ago — after 18 months of planning, the event drew Lincoln students and around 30 groups offering education, career, and health resources. Booths provided college and career information while food, games, and prizes added to an uplifting celebration of achievement.  Lincoln Journal Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Nebraska Legislature passed the Stand With Women Act with votes of 33 to 16 that defines eligibility in school sports by requiring athletes to compete by their birth sex—Governor Pillen and supporters hailed the measure while critics warn it may push trans youth away; the law now heads to the governor's desk.  KOLN
  • The Nebraska Legislature voted 32—15 on May 28th to advance LB 316, which bans most consumable hemp products by prohibiting raw hemp above 0.3% THC and processed hemp exceeding set limits. The bill will take effect Jan. 1 and includes a consumer safe harbor period through the end of 2025 so that legal products face an extra 10% wholesale tax at purchase.  KFOR
