- ➤ Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department and YMCA announced a partnership to offer free and low-cost fitness classes at two community centers, funded partly by a grant from the Nebraska Presbyterian Foundation. The six-week program will start with free trial classes on June 3 at Air Park and June 2 at Easterday to help residents improve their health and stay active. KOLN
- ➤ A local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace built 20 new beds for kids in need on Friday with help from Principal Financial. Doug Obermeier said the nonprofit aims to support 8,000 to 9,000 children who have never had their own bed in Lincoln. Nebraska Now
- ➤ The Lincoln Community Foundation’s 14th Give to Lincoln Day set a new record by raising over $9.3 million for local nonprofits during an event that ran from May 1 until Thursday; more than 500 organizations took part and the event has raised $65 million since 2012 — marking a milestone in local giving. - ➤ The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office reported receiving over 100 calls Friday morning from residents who received automated messages from a hidden number claiming they had a warrant for missing jury duty — the scam used an artificial intelligence voice and officials urged people to ignore the calls. - ➤ The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled Friday that the lower court’s order denying Aubrey Trail’s request to leave death row stands—Trail was first sentenced to death in 2021 after killing Sydney Loofe in 2017. KOLN

- ➤ On Friday, the Foster Care Review Office gave its June report to the legislature, showing 4,142 children were in out-of-home care as of March 31 and noting a 12.3% rise in youths involved with both DHHS and juvenile probation. The report also shows most DHHS children are in family-like settings — with over half placed with relatives — and calls for more support for these young people and their families. KOLN
- ➤ Lawmakers approved the governor's two appointees, Dr. Monica Oldenburg (34 to 11) and Lorelle Mueting (27 to 16), to the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission on Friday despite opposition from long-term advocates worried that patient access might be delayed. The six-year commission will set rules for medical cannabis dispensaries with regulations due July 1 and licensing scheduled to start by Oct. 1. Nebraska Examiner

- ➤ The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department said that smoke from Canadian wildfires may lower air quality for Lancaster County this weekend and advised children, older adults and people with lung or heart problems to stay indoors if they feel sick.
