CRIME NEWS

  • A woman was convicted on Monday for causing a fatal crash that killed a Lincoln rideshare driver on June 8—she faces sentencing on July 2.  KOLN
  • An Omaha man was arrested Saturday when deputies stopped his SUV near northwest 48th and west O streets for a missing front license plate and found marijuana and a loaded pistol in the wheel well—he now faces charges and is held in Lancaster County Jail as a prohibited person.  KOLN
  • Police responded to a hit-and-run crash on Saturday in south Lincoln at Normal Boulevard and South Street where five people were hospitalized before arresting 55-year-old Oran Morales, who admitted leaving the scene after his Toyota Avalon struck another vehicle and registered a breath test of .120 BAC—his bond was set at 10% of $10,000 with a court hearing scheduled for July 1.  KOLN
  • A Lincoln woman, Amanda Wright (42), pleaded no contest to manslaughter after prosecutors said she gave her husband fentanyl and meth that caused his death and was sentenced to 19 to 20 years in prison after taking a plea deal following her arrest in April last year.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nebraska lawmakers ended Monday's legislative session by celebrating a balanced budget and passing more than 200 bills despite major funding challenges—Speaker John Arch said the focus in 2026 will be on addressing a projected $129.1 million budget gap, with lawmakers set to reconvene on Jan. 7.  Nebraska Examiner
  • The Department of Homeland Security removed a list of over 500 sanctuary jurisdictions—including 10 from Nebraska—from its website after national criticism of hard-line immigration policies. An ICE officer emailed that the region showed unprecedented cooperation with federal immigration officials and that each jurisdiction will be formally notified of the change.  KNOP
