ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police reported that 44-year-old Jeremy Charginghawk of Lincoln was struck and killed in a parking lot near 27th and Theresa on Saturday at 12:30 a.m.—the driver said he made a slow right-hand turn and believed Charginghawk was lying on the ground, and no charges have been filed.  KOLN
  • Two people were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after a two-vehicle crash near northwest 98th Street and west Raymond Road at 12:33 p.m. on Monday—one was the driver and the other a passenger in an eastbound vehicle.  KOLN

CRIME NEWS

  • A man (Braxton Devor) accused of impersonating an officer to stop a drunk driver was arrested Monday near west Van Dorn and Homestead in Lincoln at about 12:15 a.m. after he activated emergency lights; police said he falsely claimed to be a volunteer firefighter and noted that a driver was cited for DUI.  KOLN
  • Suspect Joseph Ambroz, 77, who was extradited from Oklahoma for the 1969 stabbing death of Mary Kay Hesse, will face a delayed court appearance in mid-July as his defense has asked to dismiss the case—he remains in custody at Lincoln’s Reception and Treatment Center due to unmet medical needs in Saunders County.  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln Public Schools will pilot a new math curriculum next fall at five local elementary schools using Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Into Math program—teachers are training this summer for a smooth transition and a later districtwide rollout next school year. The district approved a $250,000 bid for materials to support the new program.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • Lincoln East senior Myles Hardt — one of Nebraska's top performers — flew with Millard West graduate Natalie Kersten to New York City to prepare for the Jimmy Awards showcase on Broadway on June 23 at 6:30 p.m. They will spend 10 days honing their skills with Broadway experts during rehearsals and coaching sessions.  Lincoln Journal Star

  • Gov. Pillen is pushing for more property tax relief by promoting a broadened sales tax to help fund state school operations; he said he will hold one-on-one talks with lawmakers to build support—despite three past failed attempts.  Nebraska Examiner
  • Attorney General Hilgers announced Monday that all 55 attorneys general signed on to a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family — ending their control of Purdue and its opioid sales. Nebraska will receive up to $19,743,962.87 over 15 years to support addiction treatment and recovery.  KOLN
