  • Jerry McGinn—a retired firefighter, fire inspector and longtime head of the South Lincoln Track Club—died June 12 at 87, leaving a notable legacy in local public service and sports.   Lincoln Journal Star

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The owners of CTRL Coffee and Cereal Bar in Lincoln announced Wednesday that the restaurant will close permanently next Sunday—customers can visit during final hours on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  KOLN

CRIME NEWS

  • Lincoln Crime Stoppers is seeking tips on two burglary cases, one on May 26 at a storage facility near 53rd and Cornhusker where bolt cutters were used and a second on June 12 at a home near 70th and Stanton where $200 in cash and $3,000 in quarters were taken—police ask anyone with information to call 475-3600 or use the P3 app.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Mike Hilgers said his office sent cease and desist letters to 82 Lincoln vape shops for selling THC products that are mislabeled—nearly all tested items showed illegal Delta-9 levels that exceed legal limits. He demands the stores stop selling these products to avoid litigation.  KOLN
  • Proposed cuts to SNAP will impact about 150,000 Nebraskans—reducing food access for families, farmers and small-town retailers—and groups like Nebraska Appleseed are urging senators to vote against the bill in the Senate. Lawmakers in Congress passed the reconciliation bill along party lines, leaving the state to cover any shortfall if the cuts go into effect.  KFOR
  • The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services has awarded the new prison project to Hausmann Construction— a local contractor— to build a 1,512-bed facility that will replace the Nebraska State Penitentiary and begin construction in early fall. The project, costing $313.3 million, stays within the state’s $350 million appropriation.  Nebraska Now
  • Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner announced his retirement after more than three decades at the sheriff's office and will not run for reelection in 2026. Chief Deputy Ben Houchin, who served alongside Wagner for 32 years (receiving endorsements from Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly and Attorney General Mike Hilgers), is running for sheriff.  Nebraska Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • After the National Weather Service issued an extreme heat watch for Lincoln and Lancaster County from 10 a.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Sunday, the Lincoln-Lancaster Health Department is urging residents to prepare for a heat index of up to 110. The department advises high-risk individuals to check on neighbors and plan extra cooling measures — from using cooling centers to caring for pets.  KOLN
