BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Wednesday, ALLO Fiber reduced its workforce by 9%, laying off roughly 150 employees across six states, with fewer than 70 let go in 40 Nebraska communities. The company said the cuts were needed to match staffing with market needs (as explained by ALLO President Brad Moline).  KNOP

  • Lincoln police said they are looking for the family of a child found (9:10 a.m.) near South 24th and C streets in southeast Lincoln.  Lincoln Journal Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A hot and humid airmass is set for Fourth of July celebrations today with Lincoln’s Uncle Sam Jam and a UV index that calls for sunscreen as temperatures feel like the middle 90s. Clear skies will cover Haymarket Park tonight as fireworks light up at 10 p.m.—while later on Friday, eastern areas may see spot storms and central Nebraska faces a marginal wind risk after 5 p.m.  Nebraska Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lincoln city officials announced today that with an almost $20,000 grant from AARP they will host six free transit training classes for older adults and non-English speakers at Aging Partners and local cultural centers—providing 700 free ride passes and expanding StarTran’s digital accessibility by adding five more languages by the end of the year.  KOLN
  • EPIC Option 2.0 is a petition campaign that wants to ban property, income, inheritance and corporate taxes by putting a ballot measure on the 2026 election that would stop these taxes after Jan. 1, 2028. The group needs valid signatures from 10% of Nebraska voters—5% from at least 38 of the 93 counties—to qualify for the ballot as it responds to recent legislative failures and rising property values.  Nebraska Examiner

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nebraska Hospital Association said the Big Beautiful Bill will cause 78,275 Nebraskans to lose coverage and cut $3.6 billion from hospital funding over 10 years—rural hospitals already facing losses may have to cut vital services and some are nearing closures.  KOLN
  • Community Hospital announced that Curtis Medical Center will close in the coming months due to inflation and uncertain federal funding (no closure date has been set). The hospital will continue its Behavioral Health program and work with patients and staff to help with the transition.  KOLN
