COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 200 people from Lincoln will march a 50-mile route to Omaha on Aug. 23-24 to support veterans in crisis by carrying backpacks weighing up to 50 pounds. Platoon leader Nick Brown — who trains his group at Holmes Lake Park nearly every week — said the event will boost awareness and help fund a future facility for veteran services.  Nebraska Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Lincoln police arrested 41-year-old Matthew Hill on suspicion of stalking after he reportedly grabbed a 23-year-old woman's arm near 21st and P streets over the weekend (she called 911 for help) when he refused to leave her alone.  KOLN
  • Lincoln police arrested 34-year-old Matthew Johnson on Thursday just before 11 p.m. near 32nd and R streets after a dispute over fireworks near a parked car escalated when he threatened a neighbor with an airsoft rifle replica—he surrendered after refusing to come outside.  Nebraska Now
  • Police charged 33-year-old Amber Bates with six felonies after officers found over 13 ounces of meth and other drugs near Norwood Elementary School—investigators arrested her at her workplace on Thursday and set her next hearing for Aug. 13 at 10 a.m.  Nebraska Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Judge Laurie J. Yardley, who served at Lancaster County Courthouse since 1995, announced her retirement just last week after a three-decade career that included launching amnesty court and night court—efforts to help people keep their jobs. The Judicial Resources Commission will now decide if her vacancy should be filled based on the county’s workload.  KOLN
  • Lincoln officials said the city plans to use $22 million in municipal improvement bonds to buy the former Centrum at 11th and O for a new library without a voter vote — a decision that local developer Peter Katt criticized as lacking transparency. The City Council will soon review bond issuance and purchase agreements while the public is invited to share their input.  Lincoln Journal Star
