CRIME NEWS

  • Lincoln Police are investigating two shoplifting cases—on June 14 a man at a Stop N Shop near 33rd and Yankee Hill Road allegedly stole Crown Royal bottles and left in a white Chevy Cruze, and on June 20 a man in his 30s with tattoos wearing a gray hat, white shirt, and orange shorts was seen leaving a Goodwill near 27th and Fairfield in a green or blue Jeep.  KFOR
  • Lincoln police said a 24-year-old woman was scammed out of more than $200,000 when a caller posing as a Chinese police officer claimed her passport was misused and later said her credit card was used to buy illegal drugs—she reported the fraud on Sunday and the investigation remains ongoing.  KOLN
  • The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office is trying to revive felony charges against former History Nebraska director Trevor Jones—accused of misusing $270,000 in donated funds by transferring them to his rival foundation—and the Nebraska Supreme Court will consider briefs until Sept. 2 as his case faces renewed legal review.  Nebraska Examiner
  • Lincoln police are investigating a scam after a 25-year-old woman froze her bank account on Monday when a fraudulent buyer on Facebook Marketplace claimed to send $25 via Apple Pay and then demanded $2,500 in fees.  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Legislature voted to create a School Financing Review Commission to study how property taxes fund Nebraska schools. The commission (sponsored by Sen. Jana Hughes) was supported by (48 senators) and will recommend ways to make funding fairer.  Nebraska Examiner

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former state senator John Kuehn filed an appeal on Saturday with the Nebraska Supreme Court to overturn voter-approved medical cannabis laws—arguing they conflict with federal drug policy and unlawfully delegate lawmaking. The court has not yet decided whether to take the case and a separate appeal on related petition issues is set for review in September.  Nebraska Examiner

  • The Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission approved a change to a permit that lets NuMark Golf Course remove two holes so it can build nine new home lots—this move may lead to more housing development nearby.  Lincoln Journal Star
