- ➤ A 22-year-old man was arrested Monday after he allegedly shot a gun into the apartment below him in northeast Lincoln, police said. Lincoln Journal Star
- ➤ A Lincoln man, found not responsible for a decades-old murder by reason of insanity, was arrested early Friday for allegedly beating a woman's head with a handgun near 17th and H streets—police said two women fled after the attack—and he faces charges of second-degree assault and terroristic threats. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Senator Deb Fischer secured an extra $16 million for UNL’s USDA Agricultural Research Service facility, which will work on new farming ideas for the 21st century. The funds, part of the Fiscal Year 2026 Appropriations Act, support the project that began when ground was broken in May 2024—drawing local students, scientists, and industry leaders to help farmers and ranchers. - ➤ The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office announced a $720 million settlement with eight opioid manufacturers who are accused of worsening the opioid crisis. Nebraska will receive more than $3 million from the agreement — the deal imposes strict limits on opioid marketing and requires monitoring of opioid orders. Nebraska Now
- ➤ Nebraska law enforcement agencies can now have injured K-9s treated and moved by EMS crews after LB 910 went into effect on July 1; the law was introduced in January 2024 and signed by Governor Pillen in April 2024. The Nebraska State Patrol said the change allows dogs to get faster help—though human care remains the top priority—and noted that injuries are rare even as 10 K-9 units were killed in duty across the nation. - ➤ The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Police Department announced Friday that its long-serving K—9 Layla—a Labrador—German shepherd mix—is retiring after eight years of service; she helped patrol campus and detect explosives at about 200 events and will begin her retirement this weekend. KOLN

- ➤ Former Husker Josiah Allick was named National Basketball League MVP on July 11 after averaging 19 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game for the Sharks—he was also named to the NBL All-Star Five. The Sharks will play a semifinal game against the Canterbury Rams today. Nebraska Now
- ➤ The Astros had called up former Husker Brice Matthews — the 42nd Nebraska baseball player to reach MLB — and he played in Friday’s first game at 7:10 p.m. in a home series against the Texas Rangers. Nebraska Now
