COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Lincoln same-sex couple began fostering five children after an emergency placement in a run-down mobile home and teamed up with two other couples to keep siblings together. They built a blended family of six children—two moms and four dads—and celebrated an adoption day on Aug. 19 as a milestone in their journey.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • Stuff Creative Reuse is moving donated art supplies into its new storefront in Lincoln today, unpacking over 2,000 pounds of supplies collected since November and preparing for a grand opening on August 1st. The nonprofit also invites local volunteers to help unpack on July 16th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  KOLN
  • The Soukup family found an unmarked grave at Wyuka Cemetery—Mary Soukup died on July 15, 1908 after a flood—and will hold a small memorial service tomorrow to honor her life. The discovery has brought the family closer as they uncover long-hidden pieces of local history.  Nebraska Now

  • Police responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision at 48th & Cleveland at 2:45 a.m. today and transported two people to a hospital while investigating the crash and closing Cleveland Avenue between 47th and 48th.  KOLN

CRIME NEWS

  • Today, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is increasing marked cruiser patrols to catch speeding drivers and prevent fatalities—extra deputies funded by a Nebraska Department of Transportation grant will work until Tuesday, July 29.  KOLN
  • Nebraska State Patrol said 5-year-old Nicco Hoffman was found safe after he was reported missing on Sunday morning at 6:30 a.m. in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area (he was last seen wearing black shorts, a blue shirt, and sandals), and his endangered missing alert has been cancelled.  Nebraska Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office released its June statistics showing DUI cases fell from 16 to 12 while traffic crashes increased from 57 to 61, with deputies handling 770 calls—down from 791 in May—as recorded in the report.  KOLN
  • Today, the Nebraska Department of Transportation begins high mast tower replacement at four locations—one at I-180 and Cornhusker in Lincoln, one at 56th and I-80 in far north Lincoln, one at the westbound off‐ramp connecting I-80 and Highway 63 in Cass County, and one at the intersection of Highway 103 and Highway 6 in Seward County. The projects will run through October and drivers should use caution in these areas.  KOLN
