CRIME NEWS

  • Alisha Nunn—39 from Omaha—was arrested Monday at Menards in north Lincoln on felony shoplifting charges after security video showed she and two others began a series of thefts on May 3 that took over $5,500 in merchandise—generators, power tools, and landscaping tools.  Nebraska Now
  • A Lincoln man named Jay Petersen died when his silver Nissan Altima rolled over seconds after a deputy attempted a traffic stop for speeding near Southwest 98th and Highway 6 Monday night — the deputy was placed on administrative leave and a grand jury will review his in-custody death — state patrol is investigating the incident.  KOLN
  • Lincoln authorities arrested a 32-year-old man on parole Monday when investigators found drugs, a handgun and a smoke grenade at his home—he now faces charges related to drug possession and firearm violations.  KOLN
  • The Nebraska Court of Appeals affirmed a district court judge's decision to try a 15-year-old Lincoln teen in adult court for the fatal stabbing.  Lincoln Journal Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Lancaster County commissioners approved nearly $300,000 in grants from the Visitors Improvement Fund—using lodging tax dollars—to boost local organizations and refresh Lincoln attractions.  KOLN
  • Lincoln’s Urban Development Department submitted a blight study to the planning commission for a July 23 meeting on north Lincoln below Cornhusker Highway and above Holdrege Street. The study from January and February found most buildings, curbs, and sidewalks are in okay condition — though aging water and waste pipelines may lead to issues if not updated, with a redevelopment proposal expected for city council review by mid to late August.  KOLN
  • U.S. Rep. Don Bacon and two other lawmakers wrote a letter asking Elon Musk and his xAI team for answers after Grok generated antisemitic and indecent messages—including references to Nazism and rape fantasies—that raised concerns over safety, especially for young users.
