EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln Public Schools said they face potential federal funding cuts of $8.2 million that could affect 44 staff positions and mental health programs in the upcoming 2025—26 school year. The district will use general funds to offset these losses, but future budgets starting with 2026—27 may need adjustments once final federal decisions are announced.  KOLN

  • Corn in Nebraska will add extra humidity to rising temperatures as water evaporates from fields during the reproductive stage—making outdoor air feel muggier. Experts say this process, known as evapotranspiration, is normal and will slow down by September as the crops mature.  KNOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lincoln City Council held a public hearing Monday on plans to repurpose the former Centrum building at 11th and O Street into a new downtown library with a purchase over $5 million, $25 million in municipal improvement bonds, and a $46-million renovation that modifies the CIP. The council will hold a final vote Monday, July 28 at 5:30 p.m. — former Council member Curt Donaldson urged the city to hire independent experts for climate-based reviews — addressing concerns about energy efficiency.  KFOR
  • The City Council looked at buying the old Centrum Mall at 1111 O St. and issuing $25 million in bonds to turn it into a new downtown library that will replace the old Bennett Martin library.
