- ➤ Lincoln community groups are hosting free back-to-school events to help families cope with rising supply costs as Lincoln Public Schools start in three weeks. The Salvation Army will distribute supplies on Aug. 7—while Visionary Youth offers backpacks, school supplies and free haircuts on Aug. 3. KOLN

- ➤ Yesterday, two dozen first responders rescued a man trapped in a 12 to 15-foot trench near 14th Street and Interstate 80 after a rescue operation that lasted 2 hours and 14 minutes—he was alert, given oxygen, and transported to a hospital. KFOR
- ➤ A vehicle crashed into a pole at Old Cheney Road and Nebraska Parkway on Wednesday morning and injured one person with life-threatening injuries who was taken to a hospital as police blocked part of the intersection. Nebraska Now

- ➤ A 56-year-old Panama man lost over $100,000 after he was tricked into sending Apple gift cards when messages falsely claimed he had won money for FFA and threatened jail or job loss—this being his third scam as reported by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. KOLN
- ➤ A 21-year-old woman, Sahara Williams, from Lincoln was sentenced Wednesday to consecutive prison terms of 19 to 20 years for second-degree sexual assault of a child and 3 years for child abuse (she received credit for about 2 years served and may be eligible for parole in nine years). - ➤ Two brothers, Yahya Majeed (19) and Samh Majeed (18), were charged on Wednesday with theft by unlawful taking over $5,000 and tampering with physical evidence after police say they helped run their brother's Lincoln chop shop by driving stolen vehicles to Kansas City. KOLN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lincoln will upgrade two baseball fields at Jensen Park near 84th Street and Yankee Hill Road with a $1.2 million project that adds new bleachers, fencing, dugout covers and an irrigation system. Construction will begin next fall and finish in 2027 — the city plans to use a $600,000 grant from Nebraska Game and Parks along with local fundraising to meet the matching funds requirement. KOLN

- ➤ On Wednesday, three Husker volleyball players (Andi Jackson, Harper Murray, and Bergen Reilly) were named to the AVCA Player of the Year watch list after strong performances last season.
